A Farmhouse Garden

A farmhouse garden with blocks of perennials, evergreens, and ornamental grasses

Nestled in the North Yorkshire countryside, on the side of a hill, this farmhouse’s garden is located to the front of the property as opposed to the rear. The design therefore needed to accommodate driveway access to a double garage alongside a generous planting area for a keen gardener.

The whole garden was originally a stone surfaced farmyard, then was converted to a gravelled parking area, and so we ensured that we would not need to remove multiple skips of waste by incorporating raised Corten edged planting beds to give sufficient planting depths.

Within the beds bold, block planting, in a loose prairie planting style, has been used to enhance both the garden and the views beyond.

A small wildflower meadow softens the edge of the driveway, the natural disorder juxtaposed against the rest of the more deliberately gardened space.
