A Contemporary Rose Garden and Courtyard

Climbing rose on the approach to a contemporary Yorkshire rose garden

Not every design we undertake involves the complete re-working of a garden. Our brief here was to take a large and unused lawn area within an existing garden and transform it into a rose garden, with an eye-catching contemporary design; and also to re-design the dull courtyard outside of the dining room.

We took a bold, geometric plan for the rose garden and added ordered layers of rose colour (from red, to pink, to white) through the space - mixing the roses into the beds perennials, Rhus typhina, and ornamental grasses - as well as places to sit, and a bold CorTen sculpture.

Within the Courtyard we simplified views from both the kitchen (along one axis) and the dining room (along another) with an impressive focal sculpture and an enhanced, yet simple, planting scheme.

Seen here only a year after completion the rose garden has become a restful and relaxing haven in the sun, whilst the courtyard is now the centre of the garden on a summer’s evening.

This North Yorkshire garden design is in Ryedale, North Yorkshire..
